What’s something leadership has taught you the hard way?
At some point in our careers, most of us define success in tangible ways such as title, visibility, influence, the ability to make decisions, or feeling valued in our work.
But one pattern I’ve seen over time is this:
success doesn’t teach you nearly as much as complexity does.
We’ve all heard about resilience. Building resilience, becoming resilient, and why it is so important. But, the most valuable part is the journey and everything learned along the beaten path. We learn who we want to be, and often more importantly, who we don’t want to be.
Leadership isn’t just about vision, effort, or even results. Arguably, it’s heavily about alignment… across people, priorities, and expectations. And when that alignment is strong, things move. We create impact. There’s a vibe.

When alignment is lacking, even the most capable leaders can find themselves navigating challenges they didn’t anticipate.
That space, between what leadership looks like in theory and how it plays out in practice, is where some of the most important lessons live.
It’s also where growth happens.
Over time, I’ve learned that effective leadership isn’t just about driving forward. It’s about:
• Asking the right questions early
• Clarifying expectations often
• Recognizing when alignment is shifting
• And adjusting with intention
Because even with the best intentions, alignment isn’t static. It evolves. And strong leaders learn how to evolve with it.
These are the kinds of lessons that don’t always get talked about, but they shape how we lead, how we build teams, and how we create environments where people (and missions) can truly thrive.
I can’t wait to share more perspectives on leadership, culture, and alignment—what works, what’s harder than it looks, and what it really takes to lead well.
